Congratulations Knauss Class of 2013! We have survived half of our fellowship term!!
While it took this long to take the initiative and create this blog, I think now is as good a time as any for us to dig into the experiences of the last six months and find out how realistic our expectations really were. Come to think of it, I had NO idea what to expect from this, beyond being genuinely ecstatic about starting what was, in my mind, nothing short of my dream job. I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed.
The Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship came with the understanding that we would be granted opportunities unparalleled to others in our fields varied across marine science and environmental law. However, I think that this year has been, and will continue to be, a serious reality check as we learn to navigate the intricacies of blending science, society, and Washington politics.
My hope for this blog is to share our triumphs, our struggles, our laughs, and our lessons over the course of our fellowship. I believe we will be grateful to look back on our posts and remember how far we’ve come. As we reach a wider audience, maybe we can inspire a generation of future Knaussers to take the initiative and affect marine and climate policy. At the very least, if you are a recently accepted 2014 Knausser, this will give you a taste of what can happen!
You know, something to make Captain Planet proud.
